Tata Harrier EV; Tata Motors is preparing to re-enter the four-wheel-drive (4WD) SUV market with the launch of the all-electric Harrier EV. The vehicle, showcased at the Auto Expo 2025, will feature a rear-biased all-wheel-drive (AWD) system, a strategic move to meet the growing demand for performance and all-weather capability in the electric vehicle (EV) segment.
Strategic shift towards 4WD
Vivek Srivatsa, chief commercial officer, of Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, explains that changing consumer preferences along with a greater emphasis on premium features like 4WD have driven this decision. The EV platform allows Tata to overcome the engineering challenges associated with adding 4WD to its internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.
EV platform benefits
The electric powertrain simplifies the implementation of AWD. Unlike the ICE Harrier, which uses a Land Rover-derived platform and a Fiat-sourced diesel engine, the EV architecture allows the rear motor to be connected directly. This eliminates the complexities and costs associated with incorporating a rear driveshaft, which would have been required in the ICE model.

According to Srivatsa, “Electric motors offer better performance capabilities,” outlining the benefits of choosing an EV platform to integrate 4WD. This is the main reason why the Harrier was chosen instead of the Safari for the initial electrification with AWD, although the company did not rule out the possibility of a Safari EV in the future.
Performance and range
The Harrier EV is expected to offer a maximum torque output of 500Nm. Tata Motors also focuses on addressing range anxiety, claiming a realistic range of over 500km based on its C75 test cycle. This test is designed to mimic real-world driving conditions, and the company expects 75% of owners to achieve this range, making the Harrier EV a viable choice as a primary family vehicle.
Tata Harrier EV Launch and Pricing
The Tata Harrier EV is scheduled to be launched in the first half of 2025. The expected price range is between ₹25.00 – 30.00 Lakh, with some reports suggesting a price between ₹24.00 – 28.00 Lakh and a possible launch date of March 18, 2025.
